Ear Infections in Dogs

Ear Infections in us doggies are more common than not. Sometimes the humans do not even know we have them until something really bad happens. Ear infections can cause a dog to go deaf and something the infection can go to the brain and can cause death. Even if that does not happen, it is rather painful. It makes us grumpy and no fun to be around!

Dogs with ears that go down normally have the most problems. Whys? Because the moisture gets caught and then causes a fungus that starts to grow. Ewww – that is disgusting. Dogs with big ears that go up like mine can have problems too.
If you give your dog baths, make sure you dry the ears really good with the towel!
You can not always PREVENT this from happening, but that is why you have to be smart and check/help us.

There are different types of infection, not just fungi. A dog can have allergies and that can lead to ear problems. Believe it or not, it could be in something they eat that messes with their ears. Most times it will start out as something like an allergy, but when it gets worse is when you start to get the fungus growing and weird stuff like, green ogar goo starts to come out. You can normally tell from the very start if your dog is having problems by the way he acts. They will scratch, or rub their ears allot. Maybe when you are petting them around the ears and it seems like it is hurting them.

Sometimes your dog will give itself an ear problem. By scratching their ears (allot of dogs have this habit). They can scratch and irritate, or sometimes if they have dirty feet it will get the dirt down in there and can cause problems.

One thing you should NEVER do, it try to help them out by cleaning their ears. Most people try to use Q-tips, cotton balls…etc. That is not the smartest thing. Just like a person, you can make things worse, but compacting any dirt down in there. Or maybe irritate it more than it already was. They are “At-Home” ear cleaners (For Dogs) that you can use, but you should go to your vet if it gets to bad…

Q-tips are not bad things though; you just need to know what you are doing. The girl likes to use them on me if I have yuck in the little crevasses, but she does not put it way down in my ear.

Did you know you can sniff your dogs ear to see if it smells weird? And here I was thinking my person had lost their mind when they was sniffing my ears. Iz not sure what it is suppose to smell like, but you will be able to tell if it smells like something odd.

Iz hope this helped you guys. It is ok to sniff our ears, and shine flashlights in our ears and all that good stuff. Even if we do look at you weirdly!

Brian D. HawkinsGood post Zoie. Sadie wants to know if I should be pulling all that hair growing out of her ears. I've heard of people doing that but I would be afraid I would hurt her. What do you think?

ZoiePeople pull hair out of the doggies ears? OMD!!!!!! I'z not thinking that would be a good thing. Sometimes hair in the ears is good, it keeps stuff from getting in, but it can also keep stuff from getting out. I wouldn't worries about Sadie's ears, unless there is something like a mat in the hair, than you can just CAREFULLY cut it out.

Those people that pull the hair out, can be causing more problems. Doggies ears are very sensitive.

But if you are worried about it, you can use one of those human nose hair trimmer things (Hoomans with their nose hairs. PSH), vets and groomers even use those.

Hope I'z helped. Just don't be pullin on nuttin with Sadie. That's just messed up duuuuuuude... or Uncle Brian. Sorrys!

Ivan L.I remember when my dog was having an ear infection when I was younger. He would scratch his ear constantly, but would do it slowly and not behind his ear but inside it. So we took him to the vet and bingo ear infection. Thanks for the post Zoie. This is informative for people who do not know how to properly take care of their dogs.

jimI wish we had the ear cleansing treatment available for my favorite pet, "Sport," I had as a child. He had a terrible itch and an awlful smell for a long time.

RoyMy dog a Golden Retiever was showing more than usual attention to her ears so I took her to the vet. He said it was a yeast infection and gave her some drops which cleared it up. He said it was quite common in types some dogs. I now regularly inspect her ears - more often than I did before. Luckily there has been no more problems.

GuyYeah, I think a lot of dog owners don't take into account how much damage an ear infection can do. As part of grooming we make it a point to make sure they are all nice and clean.

Good post, and a good point to keep in mind for a lot of dog owners, not just the new ones!
